چکیده

This paper describes our effort to build an extensible router in support of active networks. Our work is driven by two goals: (1) supporting the injection of new functionality into a router, and (2) exploiting commercially available hardware. Our approach is a hierarchical architecture, in which packet flows traverse a range of processing/forwarding paths. This paper both presents the architecture, and describes our experiences implementing the architecture across a combination of general-purpose and

Adapting Distributed Applications Using Extensible Networks

In this paper, we show that the adaptation of distributed software components can be performed by extending network behavior with Application-Speci c Protocols (ASPs). We propose to program ASPs in PLAN-P, a domain speci c language designed for active networks. We illustrate the application scope of ASPs with three examples: (i) audio broadcasting with bandwidth adaptation in routers, (ii) an e...

A Review of Optical Routers in Photonic Networks-on-Chip: A Literature Survey

Due to the increasing growth of processing cores in complex computational systems, all the connection converted bottleneck for all systems. With the protection of progressing and constructing complex photonic connection on chip, optical data transmission is the best choice for replacing with electrical interconnection for the reason of gathering connection with a high bandwidth and insertion lo...

Netlets: A New Active Network Architecture

New conceptual ideas for network programmability have been proposed in the recent past. The Opensig initiative, Active Networks and Mobile Agents are some of the approaches that have been proposed for adding programmability into networks. Active Networks address the problem of mismatch between the rate of innovation in network services and that of the end-user applications. In this model, the s...

PromethOS: A Dynamically Extensible Router Architecture for Active Networks

Commercially available routers typically have a monolithic operating system that cannot be easily tailored and upgraded and support new network protocols. PromethOS is a modular router architecture based on Linux 2.4 which can be dynamically extended by plugin modules that are installed in the networking kernel. To install and configure plugins we present a novel signaling protocol that establi...

A Scalable Architecture for Active Networks

This paper explores the network-level issues that deal with the organization, interaction, and deployment of active routers in a network. We have identified and answered four sets of questions: (i) Where should active routers be placed in the network? What is the network organization of active routers that achieves a good trade-off between scalability and flexibility? (ii) If all routers in the...
